Feed: Mossarium, a small living ecosystem on my desk

My mossarium on my desk My own mossarium, a small piece of nature next to my monitor

While creating my Pinterest mood board for my home office, I found a lot of inspiration for mossariums: moss terrariums, also called a mini rainforest or a micro landscape. I wanted a small piece of nature on my desk, but without the care of a normal houseplant.

A fully decorated one was quite expensive, so I made my own with a DIY kit. It stands on my desk now, and it looks great.

Why it’s perfect for a desk

A mossarium is a small, mostly closed ecosystem. The water evaporates, condenses on the glass and drips back into the soil, so it needs very little water. A well-balanced one can stay closed for months, or even years.

I wrote a complete page about it

On the new page you find:

  • How a mossarium works.
  • Where to buy one: ready-made, a DIY kit or the products I used.
  • How to make one yourself, layer by layer.
  • Which container to choose: a bottle, a jar, a vase or a glass house with a door.
  • The plants and the different moss types you often see in a mossarium.
  • Maintenance: water, trimming the plants and the tools you need.
